The body uses the same energy and material wasted through sexual activity to heal itself. Take note though, that to truly reap the fruits of the practice you must be mentally chaste as well. Physical abstinence is the first step but mental celibacy is the real celibacy. By restraining yourself physically and letting the mind run wild you will only be cheating yourself.
Here’s a list of benefits you can expect to experience from brahmacharya. These are based on my experience and that of others. Do a little research and you’ll find plenty of people reporting similar benefits.
Blissfulness/Contentment – You will start to feel bliss, which will cause dispassion and distaste for sensual pleasures. Sometimes the bliss is so great that you lose interest in everything around you. To increase this bliss it’s best to practice self-inquiry (hold the I thought-feeling) as taught by Ramana Maharshi. The bliss is similar to the pleasure you get from sexual activity but more refined (subtler). It’s better because it’s continuous, and has an invigorating effect on the body.
Courage/Fearlessness - Fear reduces a lot. It’ll become hard for you to be scared, even of dangerous things. In a dangerous situation, you’ll be aware of the risk but you will also be able to deal with it carefully instead of panicking and worsening the situation. You will start to feel what real masculinity is like.
Better Memory – You will find it easier to remember things and you will also remember memories which you had long forgotten. Never mind old memories, you will also start to remember dreams which you had a long time ago. The mind will become much sharper.
Better Immunity – The energy reserves of your body are much higher now so the body will find it easier to deal with illnesses. It may happen that illnesses actually increase in the beginning with the practice, probably because of the body healing itself from ailments, but all will be better in time.
Intuition/Spontaneous Understanding – The mind becomes incredibly sharp and able to grasp things easily. You’ll start to understand things intuitively without thinking about them. The answers will come to you naturally on their own.
Lack of worry – Your worries reduce greatly. You will actually start to find it difficult to worry because you feel perfect or close to perfect. This will give you a sense of security enabling you to deal with difficult situations without worrying.
Confidence - You’ll develop vigor and confidence. Shyness leaves you and you feel comfortable with yourself. The increased confidence can easily make one conceited so be careful.
Lack of Anger/Irritability – The greater the bliss, the greater the inner peace. The blissful feeling makes it nearly impossible to get angry. Suddenly everything’s fine. Nothing bothers you anymore.
Suppleness – The body will become more supple and flexible. Notice how flexible young children are? They haven’t wasted their vital force as much as adults and so their bodies are strong and supple.
Calmness – An indescribable inner calm develops. You will develop the virtue of patience quite naturally.
How is manufactured the semen?
According to Ayurveda, semen is the last Dhatu that is formed out of food. Out of food is manufactured chyle. Out of chyle comes blood. Out of blood comes flesh. Out of flesh comes fat. Out of fat comes bone. Out of bone comes marrow. Out of marrow comes semen. These are the Sapta Dhatus or the seven Dhatus that support this life and body. Mark here how precious is semen! It is the last essence. It is the Essence of essences. The Veerya comes out of the very marrow that lies concealed inside the bones.
Semen nourishes the physical body, the heart and the intellect.
There are three divisions in each Dhatu. Semen nourishes the physical body, the heart and the intellect. Only that man who uses the physical body, the heart and the intellect can have perfect Brahmacharya. A wrestler who uses his physical body only, but keeps the intellect and the heart undeveloped, cannot expect to have full Brahmacharya. He can have Brahmacharya of the body only, but not of the mind and the heart. The semen that belongs to the heart and the mind will certainly flow out. If an aspirant does only Japa and meditation, if he does not develop the heart, and if he does not practice physical exercise, he will have only mental Brahmacharya. The portion of the semen, which goes to nourish the heart and the body, will flow out.
But an advanced Yogi who dives deep in meditation will have full Brahmacharya even if he does not take physical exercise.
“Maranam Bindu Patanat, Jivanam Bindu Rakshanat”.
Falling of semen brings death; preservation of semen gives life.
Grasp fully the importance and value of this vital essence of life. Veerya is all power. Veerya is all money. Veerya is God. Veerya is Sita. Veerya is Radha. Veerya is Durga. Veerya is God in motion. Veerya is dynamic Will. Veerya is Atma-Bal. Veerya is God’s Vibhuti.
The Lord says in the Gita: “Paurusham Nrishu. I am the seed or virility in men”.
Veerya is the essence of life, thought, intelligence and consciousness. Therefore, preserve this vital fluid very, very carefully, my dear readers!
NOTE:
Female sexual energy: Although Swami Sivananda in his works speaks mostly about men and the transformation of semen to ojas, I would like to mention here that the same applies to women as well. The ojas in women is stored into the vaginal secretions, which are discarded by the orgasmic spasms. Sexual energy is most precious of all because our vitality, creativity and our mental and emotional strength depend on the quality and the vigor of sexual energy. Dr. David Frawley mention in his books about Ayurveda that the sexual tissues are also the containers of tejas and prana too.
