Man Controls New Prosthetic Leg Using Thought Alone [W/VIDEO]

  • A man missing his lower leg has gained precise control over a prosthetic limb, just by thinking about moving it – all because his unused nerves were preserved during the amputation and rerouted to his thigh where they can be used to communicate with a robotic leg.

The man can now seamlessly switch from walking on level ground to climbing stairs and can even kick a football around.

During a traditional limb amputation, the main sensory nerves are severed and lose their function. In 2006, Todd Kuiken and his colleagues at theRehabilitation Institute of Chicago in Illinois realised they could preserve some of that functionality by carefully rerouting sensory nerves during an amputation and attaching them to another part of the body.

They could then use the rerouted nerve signals to control a robotic limb, allowing a person to control their prosthesis with the same nerves they originally used to control their real limb.

Kuiken's team first attempted the procedure – which is called targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) – on people who were having their arm amputated. Now, Kuiken's team has performed TMR for the first time on a man with a leg amputation.

    Taking a different route

First, the team rerouted the two main branches of the man's sciatic nerve to muscles in the thigh above the amputation. One branch controls the calf and some foot muscles, the other controls the muscle running down the outside leg and some more foot muscles.

After a few months, the man could control his thigh muscles by thinking about using his missing leg. The next step was to link up a prosthesis.

The robot leg in question is a sophisticated prosthesis: it carries a number of mechanical sensors including gyroscopes and accelerometers, and can be trained to use the information from these sensors to perform certain walking styles. Kuiken's team reckoned that the leg would perform even better if it could infer the user's intended walking style with information from the sciatic nerve.

To do so, the researchers asked their volunteer to attempt to perform certain movements with his missing leg – for instance, flexing the foot – while they monitored the pattern of electric signals from the rerouted nerves in the thigh muscles. The researchers then programmed the robot leg to flex its foot whenever it detected that particular pattern of electrical activity.

Using just the mechanical sensor data, the robotic leg made the correct movement about 87 per cent of the time. With additional data from the nerves, the success rate rose to 98 per cent, and there were no so-called critical errors – errors that increase the risk of the user losing balance and falling. Those kinds of errors are most common when the user suddenly shifts walking style – when they begin to climb stairs, for instance, but with the additional information from the nerves, the robotic leg can make a seamless, natural transition between walking styles (see video).

"I think this kind of work is very important," says Michael Goldfarb at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, who helped design the robot leg.

"There's a lot you can do with physical sensors but at some point you really need to know the user's intent – when they want to change from running, to walking, to stair climbing," says Goldfarb. "These electrical signals give you an extra set of information to work on.

"This new generation of robotic legs are much more capable than anything that's come before. They can pretty much do whatever the healthy limb can do," he says.

  • CNN’s Fake Translation of Iran President Rouhani’s Statement Regarding Holocaust

  • TEHRAN (FNA)- American news channel CNN fabricated the remarks made by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in response to the network’s question about the Holocaust.

The CNN aired its interview with Rouhani on Tuesday but the news channel added to or changed parts of his remarks when Christiane Amanpour asked him about the Holocaust.

Here is the exact transcript of the Farsi text according to the CNN broadcast:

Here is the exact English translation of President Rouhani’s remarks:

Rouhani’s: “I have said before that I am not a historian and historians should specify, state and explain the aspects of historical events, but generally we fully condemn any kind of crime committed against humanity throughout the history, including the crime committed by the Nazis both against the Jews and non-Jews, the same way that if today any crime is committed against any nation or any religion or any people or any belief, we condemn that crime and genocide. Therefore, what the Nazis did is condemned, (but) the aspects that you talk about, clarification of these aspects is a duty of the historians and researchers, I am not a history scholar.”

And here is what the CNN translation says:

CNN Question: “One of the things your predecessor (President Ahmadinejad) used to do from this very platform was deny(ing) the holocaust and pretend(ing) it was a myth, I want to know you, your position on the holocaust, do you accept what it was, and what was it?”

CNN’s Translation: “I’ve said before that I am not a historian and then, when it comes to speaking of the dimensions of the Holocaust, it is the historians that should reflect on it. But in general I can tell you that any crime that happens in history against humanity, including the crime that Nazis committed towards the Jews as well as non-Jews isreprehensible and condemnable. Whatever criminality they committed against the Jews, we condemn, the taking of human life is contemptible, it makes no difference whether that life is Jewish life, Christian or Muslim, for us it is the same, but taking the human life is something our religion rejects but this doesn’t mean that on the other hand you can say Nazis committed crime against a group now therefore, they must usurp the land of another group and occupy it. This too is an act that should be condemned. There should be an even-handed discussion“.

    FNA NOTE:
After the CNN released the interview, hundreds of news agencies, TV and news channels, websites and weblogs broadcast this title: “Iran’s President Rouhani Calls Holocaust ‘Reprehensible’ Crime Against Jews”, a title quoted from the CNN; Or “Rouhani Recognizes the Holocaust as Crime against Jews”.

  • Scientist Photographs The Soul Leaving The Body

  •

(TruthSeekerDaily) The timing of astral disembodiment in which the spirit leaves the body has been captured by Russian scientist Konstantin Korotkov, who photographed a person at the moment of his death with a bioelectrographic camera.

The image taken using the gas discharge visualization method, an advanced technique of Kirlian photography shows in blue the life force of the person leaving the body gradually.

According to Korotkov, navel and head are the parties who first lose their life force(which would be the soul) and the groin and the heart are the last areas where the spirit before surfing the phantasmagoria of the infinite.

In other cases according to Korotkov has noted that "the soul" of people who suffer a violent and unexpected death usually manifests a state of confusion in your power settings and return to the body in the days following death. This could be due to a surplus of unused energy.

  • The Most Important Image Captured By Hubble Telescope [W/VIDEO]

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) In 1996, scientists took a huge risk when they pointed the Hubble telescope to an inky field that they believed to be void of stars and planets. As images from Hubble are in constant demand, the worry was that devoting so much time to a black space would prove futile. Once the photons finally registered, though, that leap of faith proved fruitful: light from over three thousand galaxies illuminated the image. A few years and missions later, Hubble’s glimpse into what is known as the deep field has revealed that we are just one tiny part of a vast system comprising 100 billion galaxies.

  • Man Charges Black Rhino In Split Second To Save His Life [W/VIDEO]

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) Black rhinos are known for being extremely aggressive and readily charge at perceived threats. This one clearly viewed the photographer as a threat.

At first, it gave a short run and stopped. Then it made a fake charge and stopped, kicking up dust. A little while later, it grunted...

The encounter came as the two were filming for a new Discovery Channel show called “Man, Cheetah, Wild.” The show, which premieres October 3, is the true story about how Wolhuter befriends a family of cheetahs.

What do you do when you come face to face with a 2,000-pound black rhinoceros that appears intent on charging you and turning you into mincemeat?

  • Congress Bets That Obama Is Bluffing On Debt Ceiling

  •

(TruthSeekerDaily) We have some breaking news regarding the debt ceiling which the government will hit by Oct. 17th! This is excellent news for everyone who is opposed to government regulated healthcare. Here is the latest mainstream article regarding this:

House Republicans emerged from an hourlong private meeting on Thursday with a wish list of demands for Democrats and President Barack Obama in return for their approval on a measure to raise the federal government’s borrowing limit.
Among the Republican requests: They want the individual mandate to buy health insurance that was in the 2010 federal health care law delayed for one year. Approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. Increased offshore oil drilling. More spending cuts.

For months, however, the president and his deputies have said they are not willing to negotiate when it comes to raising the debt limit, which Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said this week must occur by Oct. 17. Not doing so, he said, could cause the federal government to default on spending obligations.

Despite the warnings — House Speaker John Boehner said Obama called him last week to reiterate that there would be no compromise on the debt ceiling — Republican leaders refuse to take Obama at his word. They think he’s bluffing.

“The president says, 'I’m not going to negotiate,'” Boehner told reporters after the meeting with other Republicans on Thursday. “Well, I’m sorry, it just doesn’t work that way.”

The debate over the debt ceiling overlaps with a fight this week over government spending levels which, barring action from Congress by midnight Monday, could result in a government shutdown.

But Republicans seem less concerned with the prospect of a shutdown — Boehner said he does “not see that happening” — than the debt limit deadline.

Senior aides to House Republican leaders say they believe Republicans have enough leverage to force Obama’s hand, and they point to 2011, when Obama’s willingness to negotiate on the debt ceiling led to some of the sharpest federal spending cuts in recent memory. Democrats caved on the debt ceiling then, so why not now?

Republicans also point to a pattern within the Obama administration of delaying parts of the health care law, such as the mandate on corporations to provide health care. On Thursday, Politico reported that the administration would also delay enrollment in part of the exchanges for small businesses.

“This is only fair for us to say that American families should have the delay,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said on Thursday.

With the deadline set by the Treasury Department only weeks away, however, Democrats remain dug in.

“Democrats are not delaying Obamacare,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Tuesday. “We certainly aren't negotiating over the debt limit.”

  • Exclusive: Apple admits, ‘iPhone 5s Fingerprint Database To Be Shared With NSA’

  •

(TruthSeekerDaily) Now-a-days, Apple is famous in the markets because its new iPhone 5S has a Fingerprint Sensor (Touch ID) as a security feature—everyone is getting amazed with that feature and eager to use.

That Fingerprint scanner has been hacked already by German Hackers group ‘CCC’ but one more thing to concern about that—’will Apple share that Fingerprint database with NSA’ and the answer is YES.

Tim Richardson, District Manager of Apple’s North America Marketing Department admits about the sharing of Database with NSA, he said to Jane M. Agni (A freelance writer in nationalreport.net.):

"Absolutely the databases will be merged. This whole ‘fingerprint scan’ idea originated from someone in our Government. They just didn't expect to be outed by Snowden, you know.”

NSA and FBI have been compiling a special database for over a year now to use with the new Apple technology. Fingerprints from all over the nation. Cold cases. Fugitives of the law. Missing persons, Richardson added.

When Mr. Richardson asked for a response to individual’s concerns about privacy, he told:

“Frankly, if a person is foolish enough to allow something as specific and criminally implicit as their fingerprints to be cataloged by faceless corporations and Government officials… Well, you can’t exactly blame us for capitalizing upon it, can you? Personally, I believe this effort will support a greater good. Some of the folks they’re hoping to apprehend are quite dangerous. Besides, it’s not like this is covered in the Constitution.”

If we talk about the constitution as Richardson added above, Apple and the NSA may be completely within their rights to use information volunteered by its customers but it is a Bitter Truth for some of the users.

One of the user told Jane—That’s not America and that’s not freedom…” but the user also stated, “I’m old. I’m not good at remembering passwords.” “I like the idea of easily being able to unlock my Apple device with a fingerprint. But I also shouldn’t have to worry about being tied to a string of murders I commuted in the 70′s…

  • Senator John Kerry signs UN Arms Treaty, Senators Threaten To Block It [W/VIDEO]

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) Just as expected, Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday signed a controversial U.N. treaty on arms regulation, riling U.S. lawmakers who vow the Senate will not ratify the agreement.

In advance of the signing, a State Department official said the treaty would "reduce the risk that international transfers of conventional arms will be used to carry out the world's worst crimes," while protecting gun rights.

"The treaty builds on decades of cooperative efforts to stem the international, illegal, and illicit trade in conventional weapons that benefits terrorists and rogue agents," the official said.

U.S. lawmakers, though, have long claimed the treaty could lead to new gun control measures. They note the U.S. Senate has final say on whether to approve the agreement.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., in a letter to President Obama, urged his administration not to take any action to implement the treaty without the consent of the Senate.

He claimed the treaty raises "fundamental issues" concerning "individual rights protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution."

Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., one of the most vocal opponents of the treaty, also sent a letter to Kerry declaring the treaty "dead in the water," since a majority of senators has gone on record against the agreement.

"The administration is wasting precious time trying to sign away our laws to the global community and unelected U.N. bureaucrats," he wrote.
Kerry, who is in New York attending the U.N. General Assembly session, announced earlier this year that the administration planned to sign the treaty.

The treaty would require countries that ratify it to establish national regulations to control the transfer of conventional arms and components and to regulate arms brokers, but it will not explicitly control the domestic use of weapons in any country.

Still, gun-rights supporters on Capitol Hill warn the treaty could be used as the basis for additional gun regulations inside the U.S. and have threatened not to ratify.

Over the summer, 130 members of Congress signed a letter to President Obama and Kerry urging them to reject the measure for this and other reasons.

The chance of adoption by the U.S. is slim. A two-thirds majority would be needed in the Senate to ratify.

What impact the treaty will have in curbing the estimated $60 billion global arms trade remains to be seen. The U.N. treaty will take effect after 50 countries ratify it, and a lot will depend on which ones ratify and which ones don't, and how stringently it is implemented.

The Control Arms Coalition, which includes hundreds of non-governmental organizations in more than 100 countries that promoted an Arms Trade Treaty, has said it expects many of the world's top arms exporters -- including Britain, Germany and France -- to sign alongside emerging exporters such as Brazil and Mexico. It said the United States is expected to sign later this year.

The coalition notes that more than 500,000 people are killed by armed violence every year and predicted that "history will be made" when many U.N. members sign the treaty, which it says is designed "to protect millions living in daily fear of armed violence and at risk of rape, assault, displacement and death."

Many violence-wracked countries, including Congo and South Sudan, are also expected to sign. The coalition said their signature -- and ratification -- will make it more difficult for illicit arms to cross borders.

The treaty covers battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, large-caliber artillery systems, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and missile launchers, and small arms and light weapons.

It prohibits states that ratify it from transferring conventional weapons if they violate arms embargoes or if they promote acts of genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes. The treaty also prohibits the export of conventional arms if they could be used in attacks on civilians or civilian buildings such as schools and hospitals.

In addition, the treaty requires countries to take measures to prevent the diversion of conventional weapons to the illicit market. This is among the provisions that gun-rights supporters in Congress are concerned about. SOURCE

  • San Francisco Bans Street Chess, Says It's A 'Disguise' For 'Other Things'

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) A common sight in most large U.S. cities, street chess, has been banned in San Francisco after thriving for more than 30 years near Fifth and Market Streets.

San Francisco Police earlier this month confiscated boards, tables and chairs from the area where dozens of people, mostly homeless, play the game every day.

"It's turned into a big public nuisance," said Capt. Michael Redmond, adding that local complaints and narcotics arrests have increased over the past six months. "I think maybe it's a disguise for some other things that are going on."

Police admitted regular chess players weren't a problem, but said the area had come to attract illegal gambling and drug use.

"They're being mean for no reason," Hector Torres Jr., 42, said about the police. "To me, it's a scapegoat." Torres Jr. says chess saved him from gambling addiction, and that the open-air games are a discrimination-free zone welcoming everyone to the board, whether they're homeless or millionaires, San Francisco Giants players or ex-convicts.

But business owners in the area don't see it that way.

"It's an excuse for illegal activity -- period," said Dimitri Madrid, manager at Beauty Supply and Hair Salon, which sent four letters to Mayor Ed Lee complaining about drug and alcohol use, violence and barbecuing near the chess tables.

Now that the tables and crowds are gone, Madrid says he no longer sees people clutch their purses as they walk by. "It's like night and day," he said. "Sales have been up."

But Jennifer Friedenbach, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness, says police were wrong to clamp down on chess.

"Having activities for folks to do is a positive thing," she said. "We have elderly people who are very isolated, and this is a great way for them to be out in the community."

Redmond says players' property will be returned to them at some point, and says chess may be able to continue in the future if a business wants to sponsor a permit for the sidewalk games.

This needs to go viral. Police State in the making.
