Here’s What The Gerber Baby Looks Like Now (Photos)

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) You don't know that you know Ann Turner Cook, but most of us do, and have since we were babies most likely. She is the original Gerber baby, that notorious face synonymous with all things infant.

When that iconic charcoal picture of Cook was first sketched out for a contest to represent Gerber, she was just a few months old. Now this beautiful baby who has graced baby food jars for decades, has just turned 87.

Cook says she is proud to have been associated with the company whose products is committed to being a leader in childhood nutrition. At the time of the drawing she had no idea how important her drawn portrait would be, and neither did Gerber.

“I can't think of anything nicer than to be a symbol for babies,” Cook told CBS News. “And that's what I think I became.”

She believes that millions have identified with the sketch for many years because “it reminds them of their own babies. Everybody says, my baby or my grandchild looks like the Gerber baby. And it doesn’t matter the ethnicity. And I say, ‘Yes, I’m sure they do!’”

The drawing of her was plucked from obscurity in a contest of many other entries, and was later featured on every single Gerber that ever saw a grocery store shelf. Cook effectively became a symbol for the happy, healthy baby after it won the contest.

After Gerber trademarked the iconic picture in 1931, Cook was given a lump sum for it in the 1950's. She says it was enough to buy a car and make a down payment on a modest house.

Cook is now a retired English teacher and mystery writer who has written four books set in her favorite small Florida towns. She is also writing her memoirs, which will focus on her childhood, and describes living in Texas during the Dust Bowl.

The original face of Gerber we have all come to know and love has changed over the years, but one thing remains the same, the sweet soul at the center of that baby. Here is Ann Turner Cook now:

  • This Tornado Is Not Anything You Would Expect, It's A Lot Worse!

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) A tornado caused by extreme weather conditions is frightening enough, but when the twister is not comprised of wind and rain, and instead it's of mosquitoes..your day is likely to take a furious turn for the worst!

What is shown here is a living tornado, because this cyclone is composed of insects (mosquitoes, to be exact). Incredible, photographer Ana Filipa Scarpa was able to capture this event while at Vila Franca de Xira in Portugal, and thankfully was not at all harmed in the making of these pictures.

When Scarpa first came upon this event, she was not immediately aware of what it was exactly.

“It was a very high funnel swinging to the left and to the right. I pointed my camera and began shooting before it hit me. But the funnel did not move toward me—and I thought it was so strange—so I got into my car and started to drive towards it, and that’s when I realized it was a mosquito twister.”

She described the swarm as being more than 1000 feet high. From afar, it looks like a magical murmuration of birds, which to some extent, these bugs act in the same manner.

Although it's an unusual site to see, these tornadic insect swarms are not all that uncommon, particularly in areas like Leziria Grande de Vila Franca de Xira, which has a lot of water for mosquitoes to breed and thrive. Below is an image of a midge bugnado from Iowa. This midge swarm was seen along Highway 30 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where flooding in the area caused a population boom of the tiny insects.

There is a lot of beauty to be found in the most unexpected things, even those that unnerve us. These 'bugnados" as they could be referred to as, could definitely be an interesting site to see, but maybe better from a safe distance.

  • What This Cop Does For This Child is Unheard Of

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) With all the negative news that fills media outlets online and on our televisions, we need something positive to balance it out.

Cops sometimes act out against our rights, taking their authority to heights never intended by the badge they bear, and subsequently victimize citizens in some cases. However, this report about a police officer is not one of those kinds of stories, on the contrary it will warm your heart. We need more incidences like this to circulate our country and bring back faith in humanity. Afterall, the small acts of kindness build up bigger gestures of generosity.

This graphic below will hopefully get the ball rolling. Maybe from it, more police will pay it forward rather than just write tickets to fulfill a quota.

Whether this specific incidence restores your faith in humanity or not, there is no denying that this young boy from a rough area is reassured in his impression of police officers. Maybe rather than making them the enemy, acting out against authority, he’ll build on his respect for them, and not fear them.

  • This Restaurant Went Two Full Years Without Creating Any Garbage. I’ve Watched It Three Times and I Still Can’t Believe It

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) Commercial restaurants on average consume and throw out eight gallons of waste every hour, yet one Chicago-based deli has found a way to only create that much waste every 2 years!

The owner of Sandwich Me In, Justin Vrany, became passionate about reducing waste and living and operating sustainability, as a child when at one point both his parents became jobless. Meals in the family home were created from a single source, like a turkey, which would then be made into several different delicious dinners for the week. Justin realized that they were eating well, while not throwing excess away, it was all being used.

Impassioned by his love for cooking and the environment, Vrany set out to combine the two when creating his own restaurant. Many in the neighborhood his deli is established, have taken notice and with their appreciation for his efforts and concern for the planet, are making Sandwich Me In a regular choice in where they choose to spend their time, money, and meals.

The deli operates on renewable energy and uses only local meat and produce. Every delicious item on the menu is made in house from scratch with wholesome ingredients. Customers are eating well while not contributing to a cycle of waste.

The restaurant's owner is more concerned with spreading the word about sustainability than he is about his business. As such, in an effort to give back, he's starting a free composting program this summer through his restaurant.

The positive impact to the planet that is possible if just a little effort was put forth in reducing waste is huge. Justin went in all the way, with impressive results. This short video shows how he did it and will likely motivate you to enact similar change in your habits.

  • (TruthSeekerDaily) This is so heart melting. One of the most powerful videos I have ever seen about dogs. Their friendship began with the first act of the young boy. Such a great example of how nature cares for humans and for itself. You should watch this:
